Business Number Information

A business number is a nine-digit number assigned to a business, incorporated
company or society by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The number identifies
the business, organization, or individual employer when interacting with federal,
provincial and local government programs.

Getting a Business Number

Microboards and Person Centred Societies

If you are a Microboard or Person Centred Society, BC Registries and Online Services
automatically requests a business number from CRA as part of the Society’s registration process. The Registry will then notify the Society of their number, and it can also be found on your certificate of incorporation.

You will receive a confirmation package from the CRA, which will request more information. Complete the form, request a Payroll Program Account, and mail the information back to finish your registration.

Individualized Funding Agents:

If you are an IF Agent, you must request a business number with a Payroll Program Account. There are a few ways to do this:

  1. Online at Business Registration Online.
  2. Mail or fax the completed RC1 request for a business number and certain program accounts form to your nearest tax centre.
  3. Phone the CRA business enquiries at 1-800-959-5525. Be prepared to provide answers to all questions in the RC1  request for a business number and certain program accounts form.
